Learn to Skate FAQ’s

General Questions

  1. What skill level is required to join a Learn to Skate class?
🌟 Absolutely none! Whether you’re a total newbie or looking to fine-tune your fancy footwork, our classes have a spot just for you. If you can stand, you can skate—(well… almost, but we’ll do our very best to get you there)!
  2. What ages can participate in the classes?
🎉 We’ve got classes for skaters of all ages:
  • Kids Only (Ages 3 to 17) – Saturdays, 9:15-10:00 AM
  • All Ages (Ages 3 & up) – Saturdays, 12:45-1:30 PM
  • Adults & Teens Only – Tuesdays, 7:00-8:00 PM
  1. Do I need my own skates, or can I rent them?
🛼 Bring your own skates if you have them, but if not, no worries! Rent a pair for $8.
  2. What type of skates do you recommend—quad or inline?
👟→🛼 Quads all the way! They offer better stability for beginners, but if inline skates are your ride-or-die, you’re welcome to roll on those too if you bring your own!
  3. Do you provide safety gear (helmets, knee pads, etc.), or should I bring my own?
🦺 Safety first! We don’t provide gear, but you are welcome to bring your own helmet, knee pads, and wrist guards!

Class Structure & Instruction

  1. How are the classes structured? Do you group skaters by age or skill level?
🛼 Classes are organized by age (Kids, All Ages, or Adults/Teens), but once you’re in, we tailor the instruction to match your skill level so everyone gets the attention they need. Children skate through the Roller Roo and Super Skater Skills, tracking their new skills with our progress tracker! Adults can track their own skills as well in a comprehensive 3 level format.
  2. What can I expect to learn in my first class?
🎯 We start with the ABCs of skating:
  • Avoid falling (but if you do, you’ll learn how to do it safely!)
  • Balancing like a pro
  • Controlling your speed & stopping safely

More advanced skaters will dive into cool tricks like crossovers, turns, and backward skating.

  1. How long does it usually take to learn the basics?
⏳ It varies, but most skaters feel comfortable rolling and stopping forward within 2-3 classes. Feeling comfortable skating backwards typically happens in 4-6 classes, but some may learn through the class that skating isn’t for them- and that’s okay! The more you practice, the faster you’ll either level up or realize you want a different hobby! Each Class Includes the session after so you can stay and practice and discover what skating is to you at your own pace.
  2. How many instructors are in each class, and what are their qualifications?
👩‍🏫 Meet your expert skate coaches:
  • Coach Brandon Lee – Our Learn to Skate Director with an Advanced Coaching Certification from USA Roller Sports Mr. Brandon coached roller skating for over a decade and has a background in Neuroscience, so he utilizes science-based approaches to teach roller skating while keeping it FUN!
  • Coach Kathy – Also USA Roller Sports certified, with decades of experience helping skaters shine! Coach Kathy had a great eye for detail and loves to talk you through the technical aspects of roller skating if you need more complex skills broken down!
  • Skate Assistants – All avid skaters themselves who have skated competitively at the regional and national level and are certified by the SRSTA!
  1. Is there a curriculum or progression system in place?
📈 Yep! We have a progress tracker so you can celebrate your wins, unlock new skills, and see your improvement week by week. Start in Roller Roo 1, progressing through Levels 2 and 3. Upon completing Roller Roo 3, explore our 3 Super Skater Levels to skate like the star you are! Once you graduate Super Skater, you are ready to skate any type of session for fun or even give competitive roller skating a try in private or semiprivate lessons! For the Adults, we have a Three Level track to take you through the basics, forwards, backwards, and all kinds of skating in between!

Scheduling & Attendance

  1. Do I need to sign up in advance, or can I drop in?
📲 We highly recommend registering in advance on Eventbrite to lock in your spot and save a few dollars! Walk-ins are accepted if space allows, but don’t risk missing out!
  2. What happens if I miss a class? Can I make it up?
We don’t have official make-up classes, but hey—we know life happens (sometimes literally, in the form of a surprise tumble). While we can’t rewind time or refund you for a missed class, we can help you switch to another class within the week if you give us a heads-up before your scheduled class. We skate 3 classes a week, so we’ll do our best to keep you rolling!
  3. Do you offer private lessons if I need extra help?
✨ Absolutely! Whether you want a one-on-one lesson or a semi-private group session, we’ll tailor it to your goals. Perfect for getting ready for a birthday party, a skating session, or even competitive figure skating! Click here to setup!
  4. How often should I attend to see real improvement?
📅 Skaters who attend weekly improve the fastest. Bonus points if you practice during public skate sessions!
  5. Are there any seasonal breaks or holiday closures?
🎄 Possibly! Keep an eye on Moonlight Rollerway’s website and social media or Eventbrite for any updates about seasonal breaks or holiday closures. We are on IG, FB, and TikTok!
